On letting go, unexpected turns, and learning to live in the present.
In my last post, I wrote about putting my visa in a box and moving on with my life, letting it remain in the background instead of allowing it to dictate my days. Funny how life works. Just when I decided to move on, my visa came through.
After 13 months of waiting, I was finally given the green light to return to Australia. I was stunned, excited, and ready to move forward. But somewhere in the middle of preparing to leave, I realised how much of my life I had been putting on hold.
I have always thought there would be a next time. I’ll visit that place when I have more money. I’ll use that beautiful teapot when I have my own home. I’ll do the things I want when life feels more settled. There was always a reason to wait. But what if the next time never comes? We spend so much time preparing for the life we want that we sometimes forget to enjoy the life we already have. We wait for more money, more certainty, or the perfect circumstances before allowing ourselves to live.
I don’t want to keep doing that.
I still have dreams I want to pursue. I want to build a life on my own terms, explore the things I’m curious about, travel, and one day create something meaningful from the things I love. But I am learning that I don’t have to wait until I achieve those things to enjoy my life. I can work towards my dreams while appreciating where I am. I can make plans for tomorrow without sacrificing everything I have today. Perhaps it begins with something small: using the teapot instead of saving it for a future home, visiting somewhere I’ve always wanted to see, or spending an afternoon doing something simply because it makes me happy.
Putting my visa in a box taught me that I could keep living even without knowing what would happen next. And now that the answer has finally arrived, I don’t want to fall back into waiting for the next milestone before allowing myself to enjoy life again. The future will always be uncertain, and there will always be something to work towards. I want to keep moving towards the things my heart is drawn to, without rushing through the present to get there.
Life is happening now.
And this time, I going to enjoy every bit of it without postponing.
